DASA Scheme

An initiative of the Indian government known as DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad) gives foreign nationals and non-resident Indians (NRIs) the chance to enrol in undergraduate and graduate programmes at renowned Indian institutions of engineering, architecture, and management. The programme aims to encourage cultural variety in technical education and entice talented overseas students to pursue their academic goals in India.

Without taking an entrance exam in India, qualified candidates can gain admission to participating universities based solely on their SAT/GRE scores under the DASA scheme. Additionally, the programme provides a limited number of scholarships to eligible and distinguished students, making it feasible and accessible for foreign students to pursue their academic goals in India.

Institutions taking part in the DASA programme include the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other officially financed technical institutes in India, such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), NITs, and IIITs. The academic excellence, research prowess, and industrial relationships of these schools are well-known throughout the world, giving students many opportunity to develop their technical and leadership qualities.

Direct Admission for Students Abroad, or DASA, is another name for it. The best colleges in the country can be accessed through this widely used platform. In the presence of the Indian Ministry of Human Resource and Development, this program was unveiled.

Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), People of Indian Origin (PIOs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), and Foreign Nationals are the main beneficiaries of this program. Admission to various undergraduate and postgraduate courses is available through DASA. There are many courses available based on JEE Main rank. DASA provides a common entrance platform for students and makes it easier to get admitted to top colleges in India.

What Are NRIs, PIOs, and OCIs?

Candidates from NRIs, PIOs, and OCIs are given the DASA Scheme's benefits for admission to any top college in India. But do we know what these categories are? And how to decide if they come from one of them? Here, given a short description of the following categories and their origins.

NRIs (Non-Resident Indians)

These are individuals who are citizens of India by birth or registration. But they are currently living outside of India in a foreign country. They are also known as Indian Diaspora. They may have moved to other countries for employment, education, business, or family-related reasons. They retain their citizenship while living outside India, too.

PIO (Persons of Indian Origin)

PIOs are connected to India based on their origin or their ancestors. It may be that their ancestors were of Indian Origin. PIO is granted to an individual living outside the Indian country who has a grandparent or is married to someone of Indian origin. It also allows certain benefits on travel, visas, and other investments in India.

OCIs (Overseas Citizens of India)

Individuals with certain rights that are similar to those of Indian citizens but who have foreign citizenship are called Overseas Citizens of India. It was introduced in 2005. This scheme benefits individuals who were citizens of India on or after January 26, 1950 or are eligible to become citizens of India on or after this date. But it should be noted that they must belong to a territory under Indian control after August 15, 1947.
