Delhi University May Introduce PG Seat Quota for Single Girl Child
Delhi University May Introduce PG Seat Quota for Single Girl Child: Delhi University (DU) is expected to introduce a new seat reservation process from the academic year 2025–2026. The academic council will decide on implementing the reservation policy after reviewing the initiative. If the Delhi University’s PG seat quota for single girl child is approved, one seat per PG program would be reserved specifically for single girl children.
This move follows a similar reservation policy, which is already in place for UG admissions, which began in the 2023-24 session. In the current academic year, 764 students across 69 colleges affiliated with DU were admitted under this initiative.
If the new proposal is implemented, it will extend to all 77 PG programs at DU. The university has already implemented seat reservations for various categories. These reservations are offered based on persons with disabilities (PwD), sports, orphans, and children or widows of Armed Forces personnel.
Purpose of PG Seat Quota for Single Girl Child
The newly proposed single-girl child reservation aims to encourage and empower single daughters to pursue advanced education by offering them enhanced opportunities. This initiative aligns with Delhi University’s commitment to promoting inclusivity in education. Additionally, officials believe that providing targeted support through such quotas will encourage more girls to pursue higher education.
Quota System in DU Colleges
For undergraduate programs, DU has been promoting education for girls through its single-girl child quota, which covers 69 colleges. This year, 71,000 seats were allocated under this initiative, reflecting a significant step toward ensuring equal educational opportunities for female students.
The overall admission policy at DU will likely remain unchanged. However, the introduction of the single-girl child reservation is expected to strengthen the university’s efforts to support gender equality in education.
