CBSE Class 12 English Syllabus: The CBSE creates the syllabus for class 12 English for both Core and Elective streams. The syllabus includes crucial details about the exam structure and marks distribution. To effectively prepare for CBSE class 12 English, students must refer to the syllabus.

CBSE Class 12 English Core Marks Distribution

Class 12 English question paper consists of three sections: reading comprehension, creative writing, and literature. These sections together constitute 80 marks. The remaining 20 marks are covered in internal assessments.

CBSE Class 12 English Syllabus NCERT

CBSE Class 12 English Core syllabus, including reading skills, creative writing, and literature sections, is outlined below:

Class 12 English Section A – Reading Skills

Class 12 English section A constitutes 22 marks in total. Questions in this section are based on reading comprehension that includes unseen passages. The question paper includes a maximum of two passages, each carrying 12 and 10 marks, respectively.

  • Passage I focuses on assessing comprehension, analysis, interpretation, and inference. Typically, this passage includes factual, descriptive, or literary details.

  • Passage II includes factual details in the form of a case study containing statistical data, charts, etc.

  • Students are evaluated through MCQs, objective-type questions, and short answer-type questions. The word count for each answer varies between 40 and 50 words.

Class 12 English Section B – Writing Skills

This section covers 18 marks and includes the following types of questions:

  • Notice Writing: There are two questions for writing a notice. Students need to select any one question based on their preference. This question carries four marks.

  • Formal/Informal Invitation Writing: This question also consists of 4 marks and students get to choose any one of the provided two options. 

  • Letter Writing: In this question, students have to choose between a letter to the editor and an application for a job with a resume. Marks allotted to this question is 5.

  • Article or Report Writing: This question requires students to write a descriptive and analytical article or report within 120-150 words. Students need to choose any one option, and the total marks allotted to this question is 5.

Class 12 English Section C – Literature

Section C holds the highest weightage in class 12 English. All the questions in this section consist of 40 marks. Questions in this segment are derived from the literature textbook and supplementary reading text. The question format of the class 12 English literature section is provided below:

  • Two poetry extracts with the option to choose any one from the Flamingo book. (6 Marks).

  • Two prose extracts from the book Vistas. Students get to choose any one extract, carrying six marks.

  • Two prose extracts from the Flamingo textbook have the option to attempt any one. (6 Marks).

  • Short answer-type questions from the prose of Vistas book with 2 marks for each question. Attempt any 2 out of 3 questions (4 Marks).

  • Short answer-type questions from prose and poetry of Flamingo textbook, each carrying 2 marks. Students need to attempt any 5 out of 6 questions (10 Marks).

  • One long answer-type question from Vistas (120-150 words) with a maximum of 5 marks.

  • One long answer-type question from Flamingo (120-150 words) carrying 5 marks.
