NRI Quota in NEET: NTA has prescribed specific guidelines for NRI candidates in the NEET 2025 official notification. All the medical colleges in India consider NEET scores for the admission process. Therefore, for Indian-origin students residing abroad, the NRI quota in NEET is crucial to pursue medical education in India.

The NRI quota in NEET provides NRI candidates with access to MBBS and BDS programs in both government and private medical institutions without competing directly with the general merit pool. The quota extends to NRI-designated and management quota seats, enabling students to secure admissions to reputed medical colleges.

What is the NRI Quota in NEET?

The NRI quota is a reserved category of seats in medical colleges across India. Under this quota, candidates who are NRIs are given admission based on their NEET exam scores. These seats are available in private, deemed universities and certain government colleges, depending on state policies.

Eligibility Criteria for NRI Quota in NEET

To apply under the NRI quota in NEET 2025, candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • NRI Status: The applicant must be an NRI or the dependent (child, spouse, or ward) of an NRI.

  • Educational Qualification: Candidates must have passed Class 12 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English as mandatory subjects.

  • Minimum Marks Requirement: Candidates must meet the following category-wise marks requirements in the class 12 or equivalent qualifying exam:

    • General category: 50% aggregate in PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology).

    • SC/ST/OBC-NCL: 40% aggregate in PCB.

    • PwBD candidates: 40% aggregate in PCB.

  • NEET Qualification: It is mandatory for all NRIs to qualify NEET (UG) for admission under the NRI quota.

Reservation of Seats under NRI Quota in NEET

Various medical colleges in India reserve a certain percentage of the total seats for NRI quota candidates. The reservation for NRI candidates is primarily available in:

  • Private and Deemed Universities: Many private medical colleges and deemed universities allocate a fixed percentage of seats for NRI candidates.

  • State Government Quotas: Some states offer NRI seats in government colleges as per their policies.

  • Deemed Universities: A few central and deemed institutions like AIIMS and JIPMER may provide NRI seats under specific guidelines

To know the exact number of seats reserved for NRI candidates, it is crucial to visit the official website of a specific college and look for the seat allocation guidelines.

Documents Required for NRI Quota in NEET 2025

NRI candidates must submit the following documents while applying for the NRI quota:

  • Valid Passport, which acts as proof of NRI status.

  • Embassy certificate issued by the concerned Indian diplomatic mission in the applicant’s country of residence.

  • Class 10 & 12 mark sheets and certificates as proof of academic qualification.

  • NEET scorecard

  • Proof of NRI Sponsor, if the candidate is sponsored by an NRI relative, a sponsorship affidavit is required.

  • Relationship proof with NRI sponsor, including a birth certificate or affidavit.

  • Equivalency certificate (for foreign students) issued by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), if applicable.

NRI Quota Admission Process in NEET 2025

To secure admission under the NRI quota in NEET, candidates must first qualify for the NEET UG 2025 exam. After the results are announced, NTA will release the merit list of eligible candidates. Further, admissions will be granted based on the NEET cut-off for the NRI category, followed by the counselling process. Selected candidates must confirm their seats by paying the required fees.

During the admission process, candidates must submit the required documents to validate their candidature. Since the NRI quota operates as a separate admission category, the availability of seats is limited and varies across different states and institutions. However, securing admission under this quota is often less competitive compared to the general category.
