NEET Reservation Criteria 2024: The NEET UG exam is coming on May 5, 2024, and students must understand the reservation criteria. The National Testing Agency (NTA) will provide detailed guidelines for categories like EWS, OBC, PWD, SC, ST, and more. This blog aims to simplify and explain these reservation criteria, covering aspects that will impact students seeking admission to state medical and dental colleges and central universities.

With potential benefits for around 1,500 OBC and 550 EWS candidates, aspiring medical students must be aware of these guidelines. Read this article until the end to get detailed information on NEET 2024 Reservation Criteria for EWS, OBC, PWD, SC, ST, and more. Make your admission process more accessible in your dream medical college.

NEET Reservation Criteria 2024 for OBC

The National Testing Agency (NTA) and the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) have introduced new reservation criteria for the OBC (Other Backward Classes) category in the NEET 2024 examination.

Previously, the 27% reservation in 15% All India Quota (AIQ) seats was exclusively designated for OBC candidates. However, OBC-NCL (Other Backward Classes-Non Creamy Layer) candidates will also be included in the OBC reservation starting this year.

These modifications in the reservation criteria are anticipated to benefit approximately 2700 OBC and 550 EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) candidates.

To avail themselves of the OBC-NCL reservation during the NEET 2024 counseling rounds, candidates must ensure they accurately fill in their category information in the NEET application form.

Candidates must have all the requisite documents during the counseling process, as eligibility for reservation will be contingent on submitting these documents. For OBC-NCL candidates, the reservation stands at 27%, and this provision applies when seeking admission to both MBBS and BDS colleges.

NEET Reservation Criteria 2024 for PwD

The National Testing Agency (NTA) and the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) have also introduced new reservation criteria for Persons with Disabilities (PwD). Students falling under the PwD category will be eligible for a 5% reservation while seeking admission to medical colleges. To avail of this reservation, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • The minimum degree of disability should be 40% or more.

  • The guidelines established by the Government must assess the degree of disability.

  • Candidates must possess a "Certificate of Disability."

  • The disability certificate should be obtained from one of the 14 designated centers specified by the NTA.

It is essential for candidates falling under the PwD category to fulfill these conditions to avail themselves of the benefits of reservation during the admission process. Implementing these reservation policies aims to promote inclusivity and equal opportunities in the medical education sector.

NEET Reservation Criteria 2024 for EWS

The NEET 2024 examination introduces a reservation system for candidates under the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category. This reservation entails a 10% allocation in job opportunities and educational seats for individuals in the General category.

To qualify as EWS beneficiaries:

  • Individuals must not be covered under the reservation schemes for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

  • The gross annual income of their family should be below Rs 8 lakh. Eligibility for the EWS reservation is contingent upon presenting an Income and Asset Certificate issued by a Competent Authority.

The EWS reservation is applicable nationally, specifically for the 15% All India Quota (AIQ) seats in central universities. For the remaining 85% of state quota seats, each state's authority will establish its criteria for implementing the EWS reservation.

Who is not eligible for the EWS Quota?

Specific individuals are excluded from accessing the EWS quota, regardless of their family income. These include:

  • Candidates whose families own 5 acres of agricultural land or more.

  • Candidates who own a residential flat of 1,000 sq. ft. or more.

  • Candidates whose parents possess a residential plot of 100 sq. yards or more in notified municipalities.

  • Candidates whose parents own a residential plot of 200 sq. yards or more in areas other than the notified municipalities.

Candidates must know these conditions to determine their eligibility for the EWS reservation and ensure compliance with the specified criteria. Implementing the EWS reservation aims to provide equal opportunities to economically disadvantaged individuals within the General category.

NEET Reservation Criteria 2024 for All India Quota (15%)

Eligibility for the 15% All India Quota Seats encompasses Indian Nationals, NRIs, OCI, PIO, and Foreign Nationals. To secure admission through AIQ, candidates must actively participate in the Online Counseling for NEET organized by the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC).

  • The counseling process unfolds through multiple rounds, and upon the conclusion of all rounds, any remaining vacant seats within the AIQ will be re-designated as State Quota seats.

  • The number of names on the merit list corresponds precisely to the available AIQ seats.

  • Notably, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have joined the 15% All India Quota Counseling, obviating the need for candidates from these states to furnish a self-declaration form.

  • This inclusion streamlines the participation process for eligible candidates from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in AIQ counseling, eliminating the necessity for additional documentation.

NEET Reservation Criteria 2024 for UT of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh Candidates

  • Candidates from Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh have not participated in the All India Scheme, rendering them ineligible for the 15% All India Quota (AIQ) seats.

  • Those interested in applying for the 15% AIQ seats counseling must submit an online self-declaration.

NEET Reservation Criteria 2024 for Deemed Universities

NEET 2024 Reservations for Deemed Universities are overseen by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), which conducts the All India Quota (AIQ) counseling. This counseling encompasses seats provided by Deemed/Central universities and includes institutions such as ESIC colleges and AFMS institutes.

Specifically, the Directorate General of Armed Forces Medical Services, under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, establishes the rules and regulations governing admission to AFMC, Pune. This ensures a standardized and regulated process for candidates seeking admission to AFMC, Pune, through NEET.

NEET Reservation Criteria 2024 for 7.5% Quota in TN Government Schools

In the most recent updates, the Tamil Nadu Cabinet has sanctioned a 7.5% reservation for students from government schools in the state's medical colleges post their successful completion of the NEET examination. This quota, amounting to 7.5%, will be integrated into the existing reservation framework, constituting a Quota within Quota. Detailed information can be found below.

  • Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister, Edappadi K Palaniswami, affirmed the commitment of the state government to facilitate reservations for students who triumph in the NEET examination and have a background of studying in government schools.

  • This decision stems from the observation that the annual enrollment of candidates from government schools into MBBS programs in Tamil Nadu has declined.

  • The reservation, accounting for 7.5%, is designed exclusively for students who completed their education (Classes 6 to 12) in a government school within Tamil Nadu.

  • Simultaneously, the state is enhancing its board syllabus to align it with the CBSE syllabus standards.

  • Additionally, an initiative has been launched to provide complimentary medical coaching for NEET preparation, reflecting the state's commitment to nurturing and supporting students aspiring to pursue medical careers.

NEET Reservation Criteria 2024 for Victims of Terror Attacks

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has communicated guidelines via a letter to the chief secretaries of all states and Union Territories (UTs) regarding the Quota in NEET for Victims of Terror Attacks.
