The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially announced the NEET UG 2026 qualifying cut off along with the result declaration. The cut off specifies the minimum qualifying percentile and marks required for candidates to become eligible for the counselling process.
It is important to note that the NEET qualifying cut off is different from the admission cut off. While the qualifying cut off determines eligibility to participate in counselling, admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other medical programmes depends on factors such as All India Rank (AIR), category, seat availability, reservation policies, and college-wise closing ranks.
This article explains the official NEET UG 2026 cut off, compares it with the previous two years, and helps students understand how the qualifying marks have changed.

Comparing previous years helps students understand how the qualifying marks have changed based on exam difficulty and overall candidate performance.

The General (UR/EWS) qualifying cut off increased from 144 in 2025 to 213 in 2026, indicating a much higher qualifying benchmark.
The qualifying range for OBC, SC, and ST candidates also increased significantly, moving from 143–113 in 2025 to 212–177 in 2026.
Despite the higher qualifying marks, the number of qualified candidates decreased from 12.36 lakh in 2025 to 11.21 lakh in 2026, reflecting changes in examination performance and evaluation.
The qualifying cut off is the minimum score required to become eligible for counselling.
Qualifying NEET does not guarantee admission to a medical college. Admission depends on:
All India Rank (AIR)
Category
Reservation policy
Counselling round
Seat availability
College preference
Closing ranks
Students with marks above the qualifying cut off should participate in counselling according to the official schedule.
Qualifying Cut Off vs Admission Cut Off
Many students confuse these two terms.
| Qualifying Cut Off | Admission Cut Off |
| Released by NTA | Determined during counselling |
| Minimum marks to qualify NEET | Final score/rank required for a college |
| Same across India for each category | Varies by college, category and counselling round |
| Makes candidates eligible for counselling | Determines whether a seat is allotted |
Understanding this distinction helps students plan their counselling strategy more effectively.
Several factors influence the qualifying cut off each year, including:
Number of candidates appearing
Difficulty level of the examination
Overall candidate performance
Number of seats available
Reservation policies
NTA's percentile-based qualifying criteria
Since NEET uses a percentile-based system, the qualifying marks can increase or decrease every year depending on candidate performance.
After qualifying NEET UG 2026, students should:
Download the NEET scorecard.
Verify their qualifying status.
Keep all required documents ready.
Register for the counselling process.
Fill college preferences carefully.
Participate in seat allotment rounds.
Report to the allotted institute within the prescribed timeline.
Early preparation can help candidates complete the admission process without delays.
